How to Choose an SEO Agency in India: Make the AI Pitch Prove Its Worth

A ranking screenshot can reassure without proving value. Use official Google guidance and a practical proposal test to choose an SEO agency with accountable work.

Two proposals land on a business owner's desk. Both offer keyword research, technical SEO, content and monthly reports. One adds “AI visibility”. Neither explains why the business's best service page attracts so few suitable enquiries.

“Kaam kaun karega?” the owner asks. Who will do the work?

The salesperson opens a slide of client logos.

This is a fictional meeting. The question it raises is real enough to investigate: when learning how to choose an SEO agency in India, what evidence should make you more confident—and what evidence merely makes a presentation more reassuring?

First, stop treating every discovery channel as a replacement for another

Google's 8 October 2026 India shopping analysis reports that seven in ten shoppers discovering products on social feeds turned to Google Search for further evaluation. Its supporting Google-commissioned Ipsos research surveyed Indian adults during September–November 2025 across seven categories.

This is retrospective consumer-shopping evidence from an advertising vendor, not proof of the journey for a Lucknow service buyer. But it challenges a simplistic sales pitch in which one new discovery surface makes all earlier ones irrelevant. A customer may encounter, compare and verify in different places.

Ask an agency to show which journeys matter for your business. A confident prediction that “everyone will buy through AI now” is not a diagnosis of your website.

Why a persuasive pitch is not the same as a good hiring decision

SEO is difficult to buy because the most important outcome arrives after you have selected the supplier. Before signing, you see proxies: logos, screenshots, polished language, referrals and price.

These can reduce uncertainty. They do not establish how your account will be handled. A trusted introduction can justify a conversation; it cannot tell you who will implement a technical fix or whether the quoted scope includes writing.

This is our analysis of the buying problem, not a finding that Indian owners are unusually credulous. It becomes especially relevant when a founder must compare proposals without an internal specialist. The answer is to make part of the work observable before committing to a long engagement.

Use Google's guidance to test the Google-specific claims

Google Search Central's AI-features documentation says established SEO practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode; no special AI markup is required. Supporting pages must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet, and eligibility does not guarantee appearance.

The same documentation says appearances in these features are included in Search Console's overall Web search reporting. A rise in total clicks therefore cannot, on its own, be presented as an isolated measurement of AI-feature clicks.

This applies to Google's features, not every AI product. Ask which system the agency means, what it can observe and where its method is experimental. Useful AI-search work may overlap with useful SEO. Renaming it does not establish extra value; neither does that overlap make all specialist work worthless.

Put one actual page on the table

Ask for a scoped diagnostic exercise: the page, the evidence of its problem, the proposed change, who will implement it and what observation would support continuing. This can be a paid discovery stage; a serious candidate does not owe you a complete free strategy.

Imagine a hypothetical Lucknow interiors business. One proposal promises more blog posts. Another identifies that the main service page never explains project scope, the area served or what an enquiry should contain. A third finds a technical problem preventing the page from being considered at all.

The latter two explanations are not automatically correct. Their advantage is that they can be checked. Ask to see the actual page or diagnostic evidence, then compare the priority against the business problem. An agency that can explain why it would defer a tempting task has shown more judgement than one promising to do everything.

Make the case study survive a second question

A traffic chart needs dates, a baseline, a definition of the traffic and the work connected to it. Ask whether growth was branded or non-branded, whether the client changed its product or distribution, and what happened to suitable enquiries.

Do not insist that an agency prove causation it cannot establish. Insist that it distinguish association from attribution. A credible case can say which changes were released and what happened afterwards while acknowledging other influences.

Permission to show evidence matters. Request a client reference or an appropriately anonymised example; do not reward a provider for exposing somebody else's private accounts. Our broader agency-selection guide covers partner fit beyond SEO.

Compare the answers, not the number of promised deliverables

Ask thisA useful answer revealsA weak answer leaves unresolved
Why this page or query first?Business relevance and observed bottleneckWhether the work attracts suitable demand
Who writes, edits and implements?Named responsibilities and required client inputWhether the sales pitch can become released work
What does this AI screenshot prove?System, prompt, date, context and limitsWhether customers saw it or the agency caused it
What will the monthly review decide?A baseline, completed work and a next decisionWhether the report is just a record of activity
What happens if we leave?Ownership, access and a usable handoverWhether the business can continue its own work

This is an original evaluation worksheet, not a validated prediction model or an agency ranking.

Keep ownership and uncertainty in the agreement

Google's SEO-hiring guidance recommends initially granting read-only Search Console access for an audit, and warns against guaranteed first-place rankings. Its advice also asks buyers to check AI-search recommendations against official guidance.

Keep the domain, hosting, content and measurement accounts under business control. Specify what the fee covers, what needs separate approval, who can publish and what your team must supply. A cheap quote with missing implementation is not directly comparable to one that includes it; a higher price alone proves nothing either.

Avoid buying a universal timetable. Establish a review date for the agreed work and track released fixes separately from impressions, clicks, qualified enquiries and sales. If the original diagnosis proves wrong, the next report should explain what changes—not simply add more output.

The signal worth paying attention to

Our hypothesis is that as polished drafts and audit decks become easier to produce, a supplier's explanation of priorities and its ability to release good work become more useful buying signals. That is not a measured forecast of the Indian agency market.

The Umbrella can discuss search, content and website work. Apply the same test to us: one relevant problem, an intelligible diagnosis and an accountable next step. Our AI Overviews analysis examines what a website should contribute when search answers introductory questions.

Return to the meeting. “Who will do the work?” deserves a person, a responsibility and a deliverable. A logo is not an answer.
